So. This weekend I am headed to my cousin’s wedding in New Hampshire, and so I’m swinging by my parents’ house in southern CT to pick up their crummy 2006 Highlander that serves as their bitch car and my ride when I visit. Except, it won’t start.
Oh yes, in your face bratty Highlander kid, your mighty hero has fallen! Though my parents, who are out of town, “just got it serviced yesterday, honestly, those thieves,” the battery appears to be kaput. It wont take a jump, either - super dead. So, either something in the electricals somehow fried a good battery in a night or they never even checked it, likely the latter since my parents say they haven’t changed it out since they bought it in 2010.
Alright, I’ll call AAA and have them being a fresh one over. Might as well get the dud out of there first. FUCK. Did that bolt just snap off in the socket? Yes it did. Fucking rust.
Ok, he’s here, he can deal with this. Wait, why does he look so mad? Shit, did that bolt just snap off too? It did. That bracket is donezo. He can fashion up a new one with some spare parts in his truck, but I should probably go get a real replacement soon.
You know what, I’m done with this car, and I’m not positive it won’t drain this battery too. Dad, just tell me where the keys to your C30 are. It’s not safe to drive this car. You want me to be safe, don’t you? Thanks!
I know I can get to the Mass border on backroads - beyond that, we’ll see where this peppy straight-five takes me. The clutch is a little wonky, but the turbo whine makes up for it.

Have fun with the Volvo hatch: don’t crash it while your parents are away!

No, but I have been there. That area is where my girlfriend is from. I live in the seacoast area right now, but I am moving up there soon.

Nice, tell me how you like it. My friend is interested in one but I don't know much about them besides that I like how they look.

I saw the spotlight you used to drain the battery and the hammer to destroy the bracket.
A most clever ruse. Well done.
C30s are a hoot.

Plusses so far: engine is torquey in the right places, acceleration is nice, suspension is not too stiff but feels pretty planted, excellent interior with great visibility
Minuses: the clutch is very vague and stiffest around the catch point so hill starts are tricky and some gear changes can be a bit rough, steering is a little numb and torque steer is noticeable, a little too quiet inside

Tonight we went to an Irish place called McGraths

We stopped there randomly one night on our way back from up north. Pretty cool place.
Nice rex. I spent all weekend under my Subarus. Pulled the engine out of my parts car, and installed group N hardened motor and transmission mounts, a new CV, and a positive shift kit on my daily driver.
